Hoisin Honey Chicken Bowls

I have a strong, intuitive hunch this recipe will become a fan favorite! In the world of quick and nourishing dinners, this Hoisin Honey Chicken easily earns a spot on repeat. It comes together in under 20 minutes, delivers big flavor with minimal effort, and has that irresistible sweet-savory glaze that makes everyone go back for seconds. Think of it as a cozy cross between teriyaki chicken and your favorite takeout-inspired rice bowl, with sticky caramelized edges and plenty of fresh flavor.

While hoisin sauce is Chinese in origin, many people — myself included — often associate it with Vietnamese cuisine because of its role in pho, fresh spring roll dipping sauces, and countless restaurant favorites. Here, it pairs beautifully with honey, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce to create a glossy sauce that clings to tender chicken and transforms simple ingredients into something deeply satisfying. Do I have your attention yet?

Served over rice with crisp vegetables and fresh herbs, this Hoisin Honey Chicken is the kind of balanced, feel-good meal that tastes indulgent while still being easy enough for a busy weeknight. As a mom of three who’s constantly running, these very versatile and delicious rice bowls have my name written all over them. A one-stop shop meal for all three kiddos, what more can one ask? Truly.

Hoisin Honey Chicken Bowls

  • Servings: 2
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken thighs *skin-on also works! Slice into 2-4 inch bite sized pieces
  • 2-3 Tbsp olive oil or high heat avocado oil *make sure it’s high-heat
  • 1 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce or Tamari sauce (latter is gluten-free)
  • 1/3 cup Hoisin sauce
  • 1/3 cup honey, runny honey is preferred.
  • 1 Tbsp freshly-minced ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, very finely minced
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2-3 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds for garnish
  • handful of green onions or chives for garnish, too
  • sea salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken thighs dry with a paper towel or kitchen towel. Add sea salt and black pepper on both sides, set aside on a plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine: hoisin, soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic and sesame oil. This is the heart of your marinade, adds sticky, incredible flavors!
  3. On a large skillet at medium/high heat, warm up olive or avocado oil and add your chicken (nicely spread and in a single layer) and brown it on both sides for ~6-7 minutes.
  4. Pour the marinade over the chicken and reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer for ~5 minutes until the sauce thickens, reduces and nicely sticks to the chicken.
  5. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and green onions, serve over fresh white jasmine rice and pair with your favorite greens, we love broccoli with these bowls!

Enjoy every bite!
